Yū Yū Hakusho: A Weekly Shōnen Jump Masterpiece !

Early December marks the birth of Yū Yū Hakusho, an opportunity for us to take a look back at this major Weekly Shōnen Jump work!

Yū Yū Hakusho is a manga prepublished in Weekly Shōnen Jump between December 3, 1990 and July 25, 1994. At the time, the magazine was selling extremely well (between 4 and 6 million copies per week), so we're clearly talking about the golden age of the Weekly Shōnen Jump!

Alongside Yū Yū Hakusho, the magazine featured Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk, all three of which were extremely popular with Japanese readers and have today all become veritable monuments!

Yū Yū Hakusho is the story of Urameshi Yusuke, a 14-year-old thug who dies saving the life of a little boy. He is offered resurrection under certain conditions. He then becomes a detective of the spiritual world, hunting down the demons that appear on earth.

Yusuke's adventures were adapted into anime by the Pierrot studio (also known for Naruto, GTO and Tokyo Ghoul) in 112 episodes broadcast between October 10, 1992 and January 7, 1995 on Fuji TV. Audience share at the time was very high, on a par with Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump.

Yū Yū Hakusho is the work of mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi, also known for the manga Hunter × Hunter. He was born in 1966 and is married to Naoko Takeuchi, none other than the author of Sailor Moon! Hunter × Hunter made its debut in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1998, but has been running ever since.

Due to his status as a Shōnen Jump legend, Yoshihiro Togashi is one of the few authors to enjoy a fairly free publishing rhythm, with sometimes huge breaks between the publication of 2 Hunter × Hunter chapters.

Finally, you should know that Yū Yū Hakusho, compiled in 19 volumes, has now sold well over 50 million copies! If you haven't already done so, all you have to do is jump into this supernatural universe! If you're more of an anime fan, all 4 seasons are available on Netflix (depending on your country), which also began adapting the license into a live-action series in 2023!
