Halloween puddings from Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory!

Do you know Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory, an incredible patisserie located in the Setagaya / Shimo-Kitazawa district of western Tokyo?

The owner is none other than the sister-in-law of Studio Ghibli's famous founder and director, Hayao Miyazaki!

The company, officially recognized by Studio Ghibli, is therefore entitled to produce Totoro-themed sweets, and is particularly famous for its Totoro-shaped cream puffs!

But that's not what we're interested in today! For Halloween, Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory is offering a special Totoro dessert!

In Japan, many brands take advantage of the Halloween holiday to create pumpkin-based sweets, and that's exactly what we have here with “Totoro's Pumpkin Purin”, which offers us a Totoro-shaped cream puff and a pumpkin cookie in a cup of “purin” (Japanese-style pudding). As is often the case with Japanese “pumpkin” sweets, the flavor here is actually that of kabocha, a green-skinned squash a little sweeter than ordinary pumpkin, Totoro's Pumpkin Purin being made with kabocha grown in the Hokkaido prefecture.

For its other special Halloween pastry, Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory offers a main ingredient from the other side of Japan, Okinawa! That's where the company sources the sweet potatoes for its Beni-imo sweet potato puree inspired by “Le Voyage de Chihiro”! This dessert represents the character of Otori-sama.

Here, we have a sweet potato pastry in the shape of a yellow bird (the famous Otori-sama) bathing with a towel on his head, just like bathhouse patrons in Japan. His “bath” here is a pool of sweet potato pudding, and just like Totoro, Otori-sama is accompanied by a Jack-o'-lantern cookie.

Each Halloween pudding is priced at 2,500 yen (approx. €16), which may seem a little steep... nevertheless, each dessert includes the adorable illustrated cups in which they are served, so you can keep them and use them as coffee cups or for other homemade puddings!

Totoro's Pumpkin Purin and Otori-sama's Beni-imo Sweet Potato Purin will only be available from October 26 to 31, and in very limited quantities, so there's no doubt that crowds will still flock to the little patisserie... in fact, the YattaJapan team can't wait to get there!
